This eight-session group run through Anchor Psychological Services is an opportunity for parents, caregivers, partners and friends of individuals struggling with an eating disorder to receive support in a warm and empathic environment. Topics may include the following:
∙ Understanding eating disorders
∙ Meal support and symptom interruption
∙ Emotional support through the use of emotion coaching skills
∙ Repairing relationships
∙ Obstacles and blocks in the caregiver’s journey
∙ Self-care for caregivers
∙ Styles of caregiving
∙ Navigating the system of care
∙ Dealing with stigma
Group facilitators spend part of each group providing education and skills practice, but considerable emphasis is placed on open discussion and peer support. This group is open to parents, step-parents, grand-parents, aunts, uncles, spouses, partners, friends and any other adult caregiver - whether or not they are involved in active treatment with their loved one, and regardless of age and motivation to change.
This group is designed to complement, not replace, services such as counseling, therapy, or in-patient care. As a closed group, we will be meeting in-person at Anchor Psychological Services (1350 Wellington St. W.) every Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, starting on October 14th and running for 8 weeks, concluding on December 2nd.
At Hopewell, we understand the financial challenges that can come with accessing mental health treatment. To make our programs as inclusive as possible, this 8-week support group is priced at $80 for an individual or $125 for a 2-person registration (2 caregivers for the same person), which helps us sustain and expand our services. We also offer a pay-what-you-can option, and all services are free for individuals identifying as Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, or Inuit/Innu.
