Meet Benet…
Meet Benet Avery, a multi-talented entrepreneur with a passion for movement, creativity, and personal growth. Her interests span a wide range, including reformer Pilates, skateboarding, playing music, creating videos, writing poetry, and spending time with her best friend—her dog, Frank. Oh, and let’s not forget her love for running!
With a degree in business and a major in entrepreneurship, Benet has turned her passions into thriving businesses. She owns "Surf Beni," a brand where she designs clothing, jewelry, and accessories, and "Road Rocket Athletics," a women’s athletic wear brand that focuses on health and performance. In addition to running these two businesses, Benet teaches Lagree and reformer Pilates, all while creating content for social media.
Benet’s Story
Beyond her professional life, Benet has a deeply personal connection to the topic of eating disorders. However, movement—something she loved—became a key element of her healing, alongside rebuilding a healthy relationship with food.
Through this journey, Benet realized she was stronger than her eating disorder, and that realization helped her achieve so much after recovery. But it wasn’t easy. The turning point came when she noticed she was isolating herself from friends, family, and activities she used to love. She started declining fun opportunities because everything seemed to revolve around her eating habits. That’s when she knew she had to make a change.
Recovery is a difficult, but necessary process. As Benet puts it, “It’s worth every step to regain your joy and truly live again. You deserve to reclaim your life and all the happiness that comes with it.” For her, the first step was recognizing that she had a problem and committing to doing the inner work. With a combination of medical help, naturopathic treatments, and the support of her family and friends, Benet was able to rebuild her life.
Her story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible, and that with support and perseverance, you can reclaim your life from the grip of an eating disorder.
Journey to the Toronto Marathon… and the Guiness Book of World Records
Earlier this year, Benet made the decision to take on the challenge of running the Toronto Marathon to beat the world record of the fastest women to run a marathon in a hospital gown, to symbolize her time in recovery from her eating disorder. Benet’s goal with this is to raise funds for eating disorder awareness and establish accessible programs for folks trying to navigate their recovery.
To overcome challenges in both recovery and her training, Benet has leaned into her personal strengths, particularly her resilience and determination. She often reminds herself of her inner strength through a tattoo that says “I can,” a daily affirmation that helps her push through tough moments, even six years into recovery. This mindset has been critical not only in her healing journey but also in her marathon training, allowing her to stay focused on her goals and embrace the ups and downs along the way. By celebrating small victories and accepting the imperfect nature of the process, Benet has been able to push through and achieve her dreams.
Most people with eating disorders in Ontario are never hospitalized, despite the serious nature of these illnesses. Less than 10% of those affected receive inpatient care, while the vast majority struggle without access to timely, specialized treatment. Long wait times, limited services, and insufficient capacity leave many without the help they need. This campaign not only raises awareness of eating disorders but also highlights the urgent need for accessible and comprehensive treatment and service options, ensuring that individuals receive support before reaching a critical stage in their illness.
What Does the Future Have in Store?
Benet Avery has a clear vision for her future, one that goes far beyond her upcoming marathon and world record attempt. After the race, Benet plans to continue pushing forward, not just in her running journey but in her advocacy work as well. While she aims to keep competing in races, her focus isn’t solely on personal achievements. Instead, she envisions using her platform to raise awareness for causes that are close to her heart, particularly eating disorder recovery.
Benet’s long-term goal is to build a platform that inspires others to take on their own challenges and believe in their strength—both mentally and physically. In addition to her athletic pursuits, she’s committed to growing her businesses, Surf Beni and Road Rocket Athletics, which promote health, wellness, and empowerment. Her advocacy work is also set to expand, with plans to collaborate with organizations to create more resources for those affected by eating disorders. Ultimately, Benet aims to continue evolving, making a positive impact, and inspiring others through her experiences.
The Importance of Community and Support
Benet’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of those around her. Throughout both her recovery and her marathon preparation, her family has been a crucial source of encouragement. Their unwavering belief in her has been instrumental in helping her stay strong through the tough times. In addition to her family’s support, medical help and her own dedication to self-care have played essential roles in her success. Together, these elements have formed the foundation that has enabled her to keep moving forward, no matter the challenges she’s faced.
Why This Fundraising Effort Matters to Benet
This fundraising campaign is particularly meaningful to Benet because it hits so close to home. Having personally faced the challenges of an eating disorder, she understands how essential access to proper support and resources is during recovery. For Benet, raising funds for this cause is about helping individuals get the care they need—whether that’s through counseling, medical support, or community programs.
She envisions the funds going directly to expanding the support center’s programming and contributing to research that will lead to improved treatment options. More than anything, Benet hopes this campaign sparks meaningful conversations around eating disorders and encourages people to seek help. Her biggest hope is that those who are struggling realize they’re not alone and that support is available.
Personal Motivation for Supporting Eating Disorder Awareness
Benet’s dedication to supporting eating disorder awareness stems from her own personal journey. Having lived through the struggle, she knows how difficult and isolating the experience can be. Her recovery has shown her the importance of having the right support system in place, and she’s determined to make sure others have access to the same resources.
Through her story and her efforts, Benet hopes to inspire those who may be struggling or seeking help. By sharing her journey, she wants to provide hope and encouragement, showing that recovery is possible and that with perseverance, support, and self-belief, anyone can overcome their obstacles and reclaim joy in life. Her ultimate goal is to motivate others to seek the help they need and embrace their own path to recovery.
A Message to Others Struggling with Eating Disorders
To anyone currently struggling with an eating disorder, Benet wants to offer a message of hope and encouragement.
"You don’t have to let it control your life," she says. "You are stronger than you might think, and you have the power to turn things around." Benet’s journey shows that recovery is possible and that life can be rich, fulfilling, and joyful once again. While it takes courage and determination, she firmly believes that anyone can overcome the challenge if they believe in themselves and reach out for support. "You are not alone," Benet reminds those in need. "There is hope for a brighter future."
